There aren’t as many good extreme long-range rifles out there as there are rimfires. That much is true.
Which means you don’t have as much to sift through. One of these is the McMillan TAC-338, and here are some of the things that make it a suitable long-range platform.
A Capable Caliber
Chambered in .338 Lapua, this rifle is perfect not only for engaging targets at extreme ranges, but also for dispatching game – and this cartridge is capable of taking any game in North America. This holds true even if you hunt large North American game – like bison or bears – in the West and North of the country. The truth is that with proper shot placement you can probably take any game, anywhere.
Additional Calibers Available on Request
While the TAC-338 rifle is chambered in .338, hence the name, it’s configurable around other calibers on request.
Built-in Recoil Reduction
For one thing, the rifle itself is 13 pounds, which is about twice the weight of your average rifle. On top of that, it comes with an APA muzzle brake which considerably reduces recoil, so don’t let fears about kick keep you out of the long-range rifle game.
Just don’t forget your hearing protection because the muzzle blast from this rifle is no joke.
Adjustability to the Shooter
Built on a McMillan A5 Tactical Stock, which is one of the best stocks in the industry with respect to adjustability.
It comes with a spacer that lets you adjust length of pull (LOP), as well as a cheekpiece that lets the shooter adjust for comb height.
So with the TAC-338, you basically get a custom rifle for a small portion of the price.
An Adjustable Trigger
The McMillan TAC-338 comes with an adjustable trigger that’s factory set at 3 lbs, but you can tinker with it to get the performance you need at the range, depending on what your aim is with the rifle – no pun intended.
Built-in Wear and Corrosion Protection
The McMillan TAC-338 is configurable with one of a few Cerakote finishes, which will protect it not only against wear but also against corrosion, better than some other finishes would. Also, since it’s available with a few different finishes that finish can be matched to the intended application – such as hunting larger game in the American West.
The Price
One of the most attractive aspects of this rifle is the price, especially with respect to other extreme long-range rifles.
Some other long-range rifles command a price nearly twice that of the TAC-338, but the latter, though an expensive gun, is more reasonably priced.
