eCommerce SEO Agency Tips for a Better Website

Here’s a hot take: ranking on page one is actually not that difficult as long as you’re willing to put in the work.

Granted, there are some keywords for which you’ll never get to page one.

But just getting there? That’s not so hard. Here are some tips straight from an eCommerce SEO agency on how to do just that.

Add Keywords to Headers

This is the lowest-hanging fruit out there. Add keywords to the headers on your key pages (category, product and CMS pages). Add 3 to 5 per 2000 words of text on the page. Short pages still merit at least one insertion.

Write Your Own Meta Descriptions

Google will now automatically generate meta descriptions but that now comes from copy that exists on the page in question so if the page is keyword poor, you won’t be getting any help. You might as well just take the opportunity to write your own from scratch and include the keywords you want.

Refresh Old Blogs; Add Sections with New Keywords

A cheap, easy way to get old performing blogs back on their feet is to update them regularly as information changes. As with the other pointers here, refresh with keyword-optimized copy and include some of the high-value keywords in the blog titles and headers.

Delete Old Unused Pages

Some blogs and CMS pages are just duds and don’t perform no matter what you do with them. If your website has hundreds if not thousands of pages, housekeeping is going to become harder and harder with each new one. One thing you can do to make it easier on yourself is to delete old, unused pages. One way to determine what pages to get rid of is to check GA4. If the page gets 0 traffic (or close to it) get rid of it. Just make sure there are no links to that page before you delete it or you will need to get rid of those links so as to prevent a 404 error.

Compress Image Files

Big images will slow your website down and that’s no good for UX or SEO. There are free image file compression tools you can use to make images unnoticeably smaller, which will not harm UX but will boost page load speeds and thereby SEO.

Add Alt Text to Images

It’s a small lift, but it will increase your chances of the image showing up in the image results. Add target keywords to alt fields as necessary; don’t add more than one keyword per file.

When Adding New Pages Keep URLs Short

It’s a lot of work to go back and fix old “bad” URLs and that initiative comes with a risk of producing 404s, so forget it. But what you can do is, going forward, make sure that your new URLs are short and sweet from the get-go, with no nonsense strings of letters and numbers.

Find and Fix Broken Links

Broken links will tank your SEO score but you can go into Google Search Console, find and fix them. If they’re on your website you can remove the link, redirect the link, or get rid of a problem page (and then subsequently get rid of the link).

Hire an eCommerce SEO Agency for Help

While these tips can certainly help, at some point it becomes a lot of extra work for a website administrator to take on without any assistance. If you’re getting to the point that you don’t have time in the day to make these optimizations, consider hiring an eCommerce SEO agency (one who can also fill the role of a strategic advisor) for help.
